She Lived on the Streets for Ten Years: The Story of Nina Borysivna
Sometimes people walk past a homeless person without ever thinking about how much pain may be hidden behind tired eyes, worn clothes, and silence.
Behind every person living on the streets, there is a story. A life. A family. Dreams that once existed.
This was the story of Nina Borysivna.
She was born in the Gorky region, raised three children, and later became a grandmother. Like many people of her generation, she once had an ordinary life filled with work, family responsibilities, and hopes for the future.
But over time, life began to fall apart.
Illness, loneliness, difficult circumstances, and the loss of support gradually took everything from her. Eventually, Nina Borysivna was left without a home.
That was the beginning of ten years of life on the streets.
Ten years without stability. Without warmth. Without a safe place to sleep.
Train stations, cold benches, stairwells, and random corners of the city became her reality. In winter, the goal was simply to survive the night. In summer, it was to find food and water. Every single day became a fight for survival.
Street life slowly destroys a person.
Constant cold, hunger, exhaustion, lack of medical care, and endless stress gradually ruined her health. Over the years, Nina Borysivna almost lost the ability to walk. Her body became so weak that every new day on the streets could have been her last.
But the hardest part of homelessness is not only the cold or hunger.
The hardest part is when a person begins to believe that nobody cares whether they live or die.
This was the condition Nina Borysivna was in when volunteers from the Christian Mission “New Life” found her.
When she arrived at the rehabilitation shelter, she was completely exhausted — physically and emotionally. After years of surviving on the streets, there was almost no hope left in her eyes.
But sometimes healing begins with very simple things.
A warm meal. Clean clothes. A safe bed. Medical care. Human kindness without judgment.
Step by step, Nina Borysivna’s life began to change.
First came treatment and physical recovery. Then came help with documents, restoring stability, and rebuilding a sense of dignity. Little by little, she began smiling again.
Over time, she also started helping other people living in the shelter — assisting in daily routines, helping in the kitchen, and supporting those around her. The woman who once struggled to survive herself became someone who could encourage others.
Today, it is hard to believe that the woman in the photo is the same person who spent ten years living on the streets.
Her story is not only about homelessness.
It is a story about how a person can lose almost everything — home, health, connection with loved ones, and hope — yet still find a chance to begin again.
As long as there is someone willing to extend a helping hand, hope remains alive.
Sometimes a new life begins exactly where a person believed everything had already ended.
